description
Realism’s goal is to accurately portray a subject without any artificial embellishments.
The realist movement in art history is largely attributed to the invention of the still photo camera, which allowed the masses to see more honest depictions of reality. The mid-19th century was also a time of serious political unrest in many nations, most notably France, America and Russia, who all experienced civil and revolutionary battles internally. Those same nations led the rapid growth of realistic painters worldwide, who often viewed themselves as journalists more than artists.
A successful realistic rendering strips away any romance, emotion, or bias from the material. Photo-realism falls under the same category, with a heightened level of attention to detail. Realistic tattooing requires an even more refined skill set than other media, as the canvas is contoured, alive, and only available to the artist for a short time.
