The United States is a country composed of 50 states and a federal district. With a population of 320 million inhabitants (2014) is, without doubt, the leading country in the field of tattoo; no other country has the number of tattoo artists and studios that are in the United States.

According to a Harris Interactive poll (taken in 2003 and 2008 and based on survey responses by more than 2,000 Americans) and a Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology study from 2006 -- between 14 percent and 25 percent of the country's adults have at least one tattoo. A Harris poll published in 2016 concluded that 3 in every 10 U.S. adults have at least one tattoo—as have nearly half of all American millennials. In the U.S., tattoos are estimated to be a $1 billion industry according to research house IBIS World.

In 2016, there were about 38,879 tattoo businesses registered in the U.S., where the market grew 13 percent between 2011 and 2016.

The United States is the country where most of the tattoo conventions are held. Every year the country hosts more than 100 tattoo events.
